Nanny State to the Rescue

If you spend any time talking to young people under 30 who have attended government schools, it quickly becomes apparent that many of them have been indoctrinated that the role of the Federal government is to “manage” people. They have no concept that the government was instituted to secure individual freedoms and liberty; rather, they see the government as an overseer that must control and limit individual behaviors in order to “save us” from ruining the environment or from bankrupting social welfare programs. For example, the government should force us to buy energy efficient cars and lightbulbs, it should limit the number of children we have and limit our food intake and manage our personal health. Basically, these youth have signed onto the fascist notions that individuals cannot be trusted with freedom to do the “right things” and must be managed by government bureaucrats who know how to “save us from ourselves.”

We all know where that line of thinking leads: not to a slippery slope, but to a cliff where freedom is pushed over the edge for the “greater good.”

Just consider this example out of Mississippi where three do-gooders legislators have introduced legislation that would force restaurants not to serve obese individuals.

Mississippi Pols Seek To Ban Fats:

Mississippi legislators this week introduced a bill that would make it illegal for state-licensed restaurants to serve obese patrons. Bill No. 282 … is the brainchild of three members of the state’s House of Representatives, Republicans W. T. Mayhall, Jr. and John Read, and Democrat Bobby Shows. The bill, which is likely dead on arrival, proposes that the state’s Department of Health establish weight criteria after consultation with Mississippi’s Council on Obesity. It does not detail what penalties an eatery would face if its grub was served to someone with an excessive body mass index.

Click on the link to view the text of the bill. Isn’t this amazing? These representatives believe they have the constitutional authority to dictate who can be served at a restaurant. If the restaurant disobeys, the State will revoke the permit allowing the restaurant to operate.

Such is the state of freedom in modern America.
