Flushing William Arkin’s Verbal Feces

By now you’ve likely heard about this pathetic posting by the Washington Post’s William M. Arkin, “The Troops Also Need to Support the American People.” Arkin’s screed is a vile rant of hatred and contempt for our troops that serves as a vivid illustration of how the litter of leftists, anarchists, Marxists and Democrats “feels” about the men and women who provide them the security necessary for the decades of abuse required to destroy their minds.

We cannot over-emphasize this point: Arkin is simply articulating what every anti-war, anti-American, anti-capitalist leftist is dying, but afraid, to say in public.

So, thank you, Mr. Arkin for the valuable public service of expressing your sincere appraisal of our troops. An honest liberal is as rare as a flying goat, and we commend you for your honesty because we’ve seen firsthand the tortuous effort it requires. With that out of the way, let us examine the finer smears of Mr. Arkin’s verbal feces:

I’m all for everyone expressing their opinion, even those who wear the uniform of the United States Army. But I also hope that military commanders took the soldiers aside after the story and explained to them why it wasn’t for them to disapprove of the American people.

They are “the American people,” William, so they don’t need your permission. What do you mean, “it wasn’t for them to disapprove?” After Arkin cites a couple of soldiers who nonetheless “disapproved,” he answers the question:

These soldiers should be grateful that the American public, which by all polls overwhelmingly disapproves of the Iraq war and the President’s handling of it, do still offer their support to them, and their respect.

Through every Abu Ghraib and Haditha, through every rape and murder, the American public has indulged those in uniform, accepting that the incidents were the product of bad apples or even of some administration or command order.

“Hey look, everybody! There’s an honest liberal over here. See him? He’s dressed up as either a homeless activist or a progressive reporter, it’s hard to tell the difference. Also, try to ignore the smell: it’s his metaphor for cultural rot and his protest against the status quo who possess ‘discriminating’ noses.”

William the honest liberal Arkin’s comments cleanly expose the “two Americas” that John the Breck girl Edwards speaks so much about: patriots versus liberals, and the differences couldn’t be more pronounced. The patriots recognize that we are in a war with religious fanatics who want to destroy the freedoms that underpin our great country, civilization and culture. The patriots understand that war is messy, complicated, costly and time-consuming. Mistakes are made in the fog of war, particularly when the enemy’s strategy is to produce fog. Patriots support the troops implicitly because they are their brothers, sisters, fathers and mothers. Patriots know that a soldier’s blood is their blood, that no amount of thanks can ever repay the debt owed to those who fight for us, and that nobody — no politician, reporter, or leader — gets the benefit of the doubt over our soldiers. When confronted with the image of an enemy in Abu Ghraib with panties on his head, a patriot understands. This is a war, damnit. Those panties deserved better. No patriot suffers the confusion of equating that image with a beheaded soldier or a citizen hanging from a bridge in Fallujah.

A liberal hates the soldiers because he hates what they stand for: strength, independence and, above all, love of America. A liberal would burn down his own house to prove that one house is “no better” than any other. Liberals don’t love America because they honestly think she’s inferior to most countries. Liberals hate capitalism because they hate self-sufficiency, and they love European-style socialism and Cuban-style Marxism because they hate self-sufficiency. America is strong because it is independent and capitalist. Liberals want to see America weakened, “kicked down a notch,” because they despise why America succeeds when other countries fail. Just as self-sufficient individuals prosper over bums, self-sufficient, free countries prosper over socialist hell holes. Nothing drives liberals crazier than this simple fact.

See, William? We understand you and see clear through you. We will always “indulge” the troops; we will always give them the benefit of the doubt; we will always understand that they cannot have enough support — material, emotional, and spiritual; we will never blame them for the mistakes that are inevitable in a war because we know that wars are messy and unpredictable affairs. And we will always believe them over you. When our troops are smeared, it is you that we distrust, not them. When they are prosecuted, our allegiances, sympathies and hopes reside with them, not their accusers. In short, we believe them, not you. We support their fight, not yours.

Sure, it is the junior enlisted men who go to jail. But even at anti-war protests, the focus is firmly on the White House and the policy. We don’t see very many “baby killer” epithets being thrown around these days, no one in uniform is being spit upon.

So, we pay the soldiers a decent wage, take care of their families, provide them with housing and medical care and vast social support systems and ship obscene amenities into the war zone for them, we support them in every possible way, and their attitude is that we should in addition roll over and play dead, defer to the military and the generals and let them fight their war, and give up our rights and responsibilities to speak up because they are above society?

Go ahead, William and your ilk, throw around the epithets and spit on the troops. The troops and their supporters have lived the “sticks-and-stones” parable, and we can take it. Actually, all you do is further isolate yourself so that we can recognize you in our presence, and this is a good thing. We know that you’re out there — William and the liberals — but we can’t always smell you, so we appreciate it when you fly your freak flag for us easily to see. We tolerate you and your hatred because it makes us, our beliefs and our freedoms stronger. You are no threat to us like we are to you.

You are right to lash out at us in fear because we are strong and threaten every backward notion, emotion, and philosophy that barely supports your timid existence. You will lose. And, you know it. We know it too, so we aren’t surprised when you demean the troops by making it sound like they’ve won the damned lottery and are fighting, not in Iraq and Afghanistan, but in Disney World. Just as we believe that it is impossible to support our troops enough, you want to convey the impression that they’re pampered with “obscene amenities.” When you ramble on about “housing and medical care and vast social support systems” you reveal what you value: government-supplied care. We recognize the mating call of a socialist when we hear it. But to the troops, these are little things compared to love, family and the sincere appreciation of grateful, freedom-loving citizens. William, you and your liberals just wouldn’t understand. It’s a freedom thing.

William, you are so pathetic that you honestly think that you can insult us by projecting your values onto ours. You impoverished bum! All of the housing, medical care and social services in the world are mere trinkets to us! These aren’t what we value. You are an oil slick on the ocean of existence — a superficial sheen, a two-dimensional film in a deep pool. Every blood vessel you pop in anger and frustration is of no more consequence to us than a spitball hitting a mountain. Thank you for providing us a reason to point this out. We could all use more comic relief.

I can imagine some post-9/11 moment, when the American people say enough already with the wars against terrorism and those in the national security establishment feel these same frustrations. In my little parable, those in leadership positions shake their heads that the people don’t get it, that they don’t understand that the threat from terrorism, while difficult to defeat, demands commitment and sacrifice and is very real because it is so shadowy, that the very survival of the United States is at stake. Those Hoovers and Nixons will use these kids in uniform as their soldiers. If it weren’t about the United States, I’d say the story would end with a military coup where those in the know, and those with fire in their bellies, would save the nation from the people.

But it is the United States, and the recent NBC report is just an ugly reminder of the price we pay for a mercenary – oops sorry, volunteer – force that thinks it is doing the dirty work.

Like all good little liberals, William just hates the concept of someone providing a service for, gasp, money. Yes, William, we pay our troops to fight for us, and yes, William, they are a volunteer force: nobody held a gun to their head and made them sign up. And, no, William, they are not fighting in a foreign army; although, we understand how you could view it that way since the America that we live in is foreign and hostile to the America that you’d like to live in. We forgive your misunderstandings because we see how painful this reality is to you. Get used to it, though.

While we’re talking about our volunteer army, let’s admit that we don’t pay our men and women in uniform nearly enough money for the work that they do. No amount of money can instill in a citizen the deep calling to sacrifice everything in the service of liberty, but the least we can do is provide financial compensation commensurate with the responsibilities that these great patriots assume. We humbly suggest that, as a starting pay rate for military personnel, we double the average public educator’s salary and go up from there.

Again, William, thanks for the rant. We don’t often hear such clear-cut examples of honest, liberal hatred because, as cowardly pack animals, liberals tend to mutter their musings from deep within the herd.

Baaaaah.
