Sowell’s “Random Thoughts”

I especially enjoy reading Thomas Sowell’s “Random Thoughts” essays because they make more sense than most people’s non-random confusion. Sowell’s latest column is no exception. Here are the gems:

Too many people in positions of responsibility act as if these are just positions of opportunity — for themselves. The ones who simply steal money probably do less harm than teachers who propagandize their students, media who slant the news or politicians who sell out their country’s interests in order to get re-elected.

Amen, brother, and pass the sweet potatoes. That is the truth if ever it was uttered.

“Global warming” seems to be joining “diversity,” “gun control,” “open space” and a growing list of other subjects where rational discussion has become impossible — and where you are considered a bad person even for wanting to discuss it rationally.

I would add “abortion” to that list. It’s a topic that simply cannot be discussed rationally. Everyone has chosen sides, and any “discussion” immediately devolves into name-calling, assumptions, and stereotypes. We’re in trouble, as a free country, when we are so divided and polarized on certain topics that we can’t exercise our freedom of speech rationally.

A review of one of the many environmentalist books says that even if you can’t do all you would like toward “living green,” you can at least “congratulate yourself on taking small steps to improve the planet.” That is what environmentalism — and much else on the political left’s agenda — is really all about, self congratulation.

No damned kidding! A colleague of mine recently “recycled” a banana peel that I was about to throw in the garbage. Fine. Then she said, “I’m doing this for you and your kids.” My immediate thought was, “No the hell you’re not. You’re doing it so you’ll feel good about yourself.” That, in a nutshell, is the modern environmental movement.

I am so old that I can remember a Democrat, at his inauguration as President, say of our enemies: “We dare not tempt them with weakness.”

Well, Sowell must be much older than I am! Modern Democrats can’t tempt our enemies enough in their ruinous quest to see America transformed into a European-style, socialist hell-hole.
