Courtney Kupets’ all-around effort propels Georgia to Super Six:

SALT LAKE CITY – Courtney Kupets insisted she was as nervous as a little girl competing in her first gymnastics meet.

No one would have ever guessed it. Not by the way she quietly assembled her best all-around score of the season to send Georgia to the NCAA Championships Super Six with a session-best 197.7 at the Huntsman Center on Thursday.

Kupets toyed with perfection on every event, scoring a 9.95 on three routines and a 9.9 on beam for a 39.75 and became just the fifth Bulldog to be a five-time All-American in the same season.

“I felt like I did a good job,” Kupets said. “I definitely had some errors the past couple of days, and I think I picked it up a little bit on the landing areas. That’s one thing that I was really proud of, that I was able to try to stick my landings.”

The Bulldogs (26-2-1) were so impressive in advancing to today’s national championship session, they didn’t have to count a score lower than 9.825. They had 10 scores of 9.9 or higher and defeated No. 1 Florida (197.4) for the first time in three meets this season. Nebraska (196.625) also qualified from Thursday’s early session. Three other teams qualified from the late session.

“They came out and competed like they were possessed,” Georgia coach Suzanne Yoculan said. “They stuck to the plan, and for us, the meet wasn’t over until Courtney dismounted bars.”

Way to go, Courtney and her fellow gymdogs, and best of luck today in the Super Six.
