An Inconvenient Power Bill

Since we’re discussing the bureaucrats at The Ministry of Warming, have you heard about the energy usage at Al Gore’s mansion?

Gore’s mansion, located in the posh Belle Meade area of Nashville, consumes more electricity every month than the average American household uses in an entire year, according to the Nashville Electric Service (NES).

In his documentary, the former Vice President calls on Americans to conserve energy by reducing electricity consumption at home.

The average household in America consumes 10,656 kilowatt-hours (kWh) per year, according to the Department of Energy. In 2006, Gore devoured nearly 221,000 kWh—more than 20 times the national average.

Last August alone, Gore burned through 22,619 kWh—guzzling more than twice the electricity in one month than an average American family uses in an entire year. As a result of his energy consumption, Gore’s average monthly electric bill topped $1,359.

Since the release of An Inconvenient Truth, Gore’s energy consumption has increased from an average of 16,200 kWh per month in 2005, to 18,400 kWh per month in 2006.

Gore’s extravagant energy use does not stop at his electric bill. Natural gas bills for Gore’s mansion and guest house averaged $1,080 per month last year.

What an inconvenient truth that is, and it reeks of hypocrisy to us less-enlightened observers who don’t understand the nuances of carbon credits. Iowavoice has these comments:

Think Progress, a liberal site if there ever was one, talked to the Gore camp. The explanation? Well, it’s ok, because Gore buys carbon offsets. How nice for him. But quick question: how many regular Americans would be able to do that if the Democrats pass the draconian global warming legislation that we’re sure to see? Not many, I’m sure.

Except, of course, the rich. But here’s a dirty secret for you: Hollywood liberals and Democrat politicians are rich. They can afford to bow to the global warming nutjobs, but most Americans can’t. That’s how out of touch these people are.

And let’s not overlook the fact that even though Algore buys “carbon credits”, that doesn’t reduce a damn thing in the way of pollution or anything. It’s a “feel good” measure that allows liberals to say “I’m doing my part” without actually doing a thing.

Al Gore’s hypocrisy is no surprise. Like all totalitarians, Gore plans to solve the world’s problems by making you sacrifice, not himself. The self-appointed savior of the planet no more intends to follow his advice than Congressmen intend to retire under Social Security. The elite are immunized against the consequences of their dictates even as they assure us (as good Big Brothers) that “it hurts them more than it hurts us.” Riiiight.

The rest of us are in for some hard times if we try to live up to Al’s “standard.” After all, you don’t get an official endorsement from Cuba unless there’s some anti-capitalist meat in there.

Sunday’s Union of Young Communist’s newspaper reported acting Cuban President Raul Castro “recognized the effort of the former vice president to denounce” global warming during a two-hour meeting with youth leaders on Friday.

Cuba’s official and only television media showed Gore’s documentary An Inconvenient Truth on prime time this month and an update by Gore, giving the one-time presidential contender more positive publicity than any other US leader in decades.
