Leftist Professor “Cuts and Runs”

A quick followup to our story on the leftist professor who (1) called on troops to kill their superiors and (2) attempted to intimidate a student by calling her a fascist (among other things):

Professor Daly has resigned his teaching post at Warren County Community College.

One disturbing aspect of this story is the initial reaction of Warren Community College President William Austin. From the article:

Instead of admonishing the professor’s intemperate attack on a student’s right of free expression, Warren Community College President William Austin said Prof. John Daly has “first amendment rights” to harass Rebecca. Furthermore, the President is trying to bully Rebecca into silence. He said Rebecca, not Prof. John Daly, is ruining the college’s name by going on talk radio and television exposing Daly’s mean spirited email.

Let’s get a few things straight:

  1. ONLY the government can censor because only the government has the legal right to use force to punish people for their speech. It is not censorship if I refuse to let you write on my blog, and it is not censorship if you are fired from your job because you insult your boss. It IS censorship if you are punished by the government for exercising your right to speak freely.
  2. In this instance, the professor was a government employee, and he was using his position of authority to intimidate a student into silence through not-so-subtle threats.
  3. There is no “right to censor”, and it is a perversion of the First Amendment to the US Constitution to suggest that a government employee may utilize “speech” to suppress the expression of a citizen.

Good riddance to you, Professor Daly. This afternoon I heard Sean Hannity’s interview with Rebecca, and she claimed that, although he has resigned, Daly still hasn’t apologized for his remarks. How typical.
