A Great Day

What a great day in Iraq today. Here are a couple of quotes I read in the NY Times:

“This election is the one we’ve been waiting for – it’s going to determine our destiny,” said Ali al-Nuaimy, 49, a physical fitness trainer, who voted in Baghdad.

“I’m so happy,” said Mahmood Mohammad Hussein, 25, a student at the local agricultural college, who said he was voting for the first time in his life.

And this from President Bush earlier today:

“I want to congratulate the Iraqi citizens for being courageous and in defying the terrorists and refusing to be cowed into not voting. I believe freedom is universal. I believe the Iraqi citizen cares just as much about freedom and living a free life as the American citizen does.”

It’s strange to me that anyone would find President Bush’s statement that freedom is universal as controversial. I have no doubt that he is right. And I think Iraq will demonstrate just that. In any case, what a great day!
